Marcus House

Marcus House is a popular YouTuber and space enthusiast.

He has more than 400 thousand subscribers on his YouTube channel by the name Marcus House.

Introduction-

Marcus House was born in 1980.

He grew up in Tasmania, Australia and still lives here.

His father, Kevin House is a Political Candidate.

Marcus has a brother and a sister.

Love for computers & rockets-

At 6, Marcus developed a passion for computers.

At that time, even though computers weren’t very accessible to him, he developed a passion for programming.

And thanks to this passion, Marcus later grew up to become a Programmer and Web Developer.

He wasn’t exposed much to science and technology until his high school, and it took him no time to develop a passion towards science and technology.

From his high school years, Marcus started following the space industry and loved watching shuttles with great fervour.

Even though he doesn’t have any formal training in rocketry and isn’t an engineer, he learnt a lot by researching on his own and this later helped him in the success of his YouTube channel.

Education & career-

From 1993 to 1995, Marcus studied from St Brendan-Shaw College in Devonport, Australia.

Then, from 1996 to 1998, he studied at St Patrick’s College in Prospect, Tasmania, Australia.

From 2000 to 2001, Marcus studied for a Diploma in Multimedia and Computer Programming from TAFE NSW in Dubbo, Australia.

Here, he won the prize for “Outstanding Achievement of the Year”.

From June 2001 to October 2010, Marcus worked as a Web Programmer and Program Manager at Autech Software.

From 2005 to 2011, he worked as a Freelance Web Developer and Programmer for DATAwebnet.

From January 2018 to May 2018, Marcus worked as a Lead Developer for S. Group in Launceston, Tasmania.

Since March 2011, he has been working as a Web Developer for Walker Designs in Tasmania.

An accidental YouTuber-

Marcus started his YouTube channel by the name Marcus House on 17 February 2012 but didn’t publish any video onto it until April 2016.

In 2016, while working as a Web Developer, he was tasked with uploading one of his client’s videos onto YouTube.

But as Marcus never uploaded a video before, after returning home, he researched the process and at that time, he was playing the Kerbal Space Program game, so he decided to upload a couple of screen recordings of himself playing this game onto his YouTube channel.

Initially, even though he uploaded the video onto his channel, he didn’t publish it but after a while he published it.

This video is titled ‘Beginners Career Guide (Beginner Tutorial: Part 1) – Kerbal Space Program (KSP) 1.1 Stock Career’ and was published on 2 April 2016.

A week later Marcus noticed that his video had 100 views and was elated on receiving positive comments and emails for his video.

He wasn’t satisfied with the quality of his first video and so, he seriously worked and produced his second video which also received appreciation from viewers and thanks to this, he continued publishing videos onto his YouTube channel.

His inspirations-

Even before Marcus started working on his YouTube channel, he was following the YouTube channels, Scott Manley and ShadowZone.

These channels used to produce videos on Kerbal Space Program and as he was inspired by these channels, he too started producing videos on Kerbal Space Program.

Transitioning to SpaceX-

After publishing videos on Kerbal Space Program for around two and a half years, Marcus accrued 30,000 subscribers on his channel.

He observed that the viewership for all his Kerbal Space videos was decreasing except that of his SpaceX Kerbal Space videos.

So, Marcus decided to transition to the real-world SpaceX and so, he stopped producing videos on Kerbal Space Program and started producing videos on SpaceX.

His first exclusive SpaceX video is titled ‘What amazing SpaceX milestones are coming in 2019?’ and was published on 19 January 2019.

Marcus started getting a good number of views on his videos and so, he continued making videos on SpaceX.

His first viral video-

Marcus’s first viral video is titled ‘How is Spacex Starlink going to be revolutionary?’.

This video was published on 25 May 2019 and as of January 2023, it has accrued over 846K views.

Becoming successful-

Even after consistently publishing a video every week for two and a half years, his videos couldn’t get a large number of views and so Marcus wasn’t able to earn decent money from his YouTube channel.

Then, as his videos started becoming popular, he started earning good money with his channel and also started receiving sponsorships.

Initially, for two and a half years Marcus solely worked on his YouTube channel and at that time, he used to work 80-90 hours on his channel.

But later he hired a team consisting of editors, scriptwriters, etc. to help him with his YouTube channel.

As of January 2023, Marcus has 451K subscribers on his YouTube channel.

And has 106.3K followers on Twitter.

He earns from a variety of sources like advertisements on his YouTube videos, selling merchandise, receiving sponsorships, YouTube Memberships and he also accepts donations on Patreon.

Marcus also has a website.

Much like him, his sons are also interested in space.

I am an older American whose family hails from northern England, also a few hundred years ago, LOL. Been watching Marcus for a couple of years and appreciate his devotion to his craft and passion. From my perspective, Tasmania seems like an idyllic and secret corner of the world. Wish I could visit there. I might never leave!! Thanks for highlighting Marcus’s life here. All the best to all.
