Luke Nichols is one of the world’s most popular outdoorsmen and YouTubers.
This former attorney has over 20 million subscribers across his two YouTube channels.
Introduction-
Luke Nichols was born on October 3, 1978 in Anchorage, Alaska, United States.
His parents are Melvin Nichols and Sharon Nichols.
Melvin was a civil engineer and successful businessman.
Luke has an elder brother, Dan Nichols, who works as a rural development engineer in the Bush (Alaska) with water sewer infrastructure projects and remote communities.
Love for fishing & hunting-
Luke grew up in Anchorage watching his grandfathers, father and brother fishing.
The young Luke fell in love with fishing after his father took him fishing and started fly fishing for trout and salmon.
He earned and saved money to buy his first fly rod in his junior high school.
He also did a lot of ice fishing in Alaska.
Later, Luke took his kids on trips and introduced them to fishing.
The young Luke also used to do a lot of hunting in Alaska mainly of upland game birds especially waterfowl like ducks, grouse, quails and ptarmigans and sandhill cranes.
The teenage Luke wanted to grow up to become a professional wood carver specializing in native Alaskan totemic art. He used to design and sell totem poles and paddles.
Serving in Japan-
After living in Alaska until 19, Luke volunteered to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan.
He served as a Missionary at the church in Fukuoka, Japan, from 1997 to 1999 and learnt to speak Japanese.
After this mission, Luke attended Brigham Young University (BYU), Utah.
Initially, he didn’t fish in Utah as he felt that fishing wouldn’t be as great in Utah as it was in Alaska but later, he realized that Utah too had some great fishing.
Education & struggles-
After doing his schooling from Robert Service High School in Anchorage, in 1996, Luke attended BYU to study for a BS in Political Science and graduated in 2004.
In 2006, he attended Antonin Scalia Law School – George Mason University in Arlington, Virginia to study for a Juris Doctorate in Criminal Law & Immigration Law and graduated in 2009.
As Luke didn’t like school, he didn’t do well at it.
At the time, he prioritized fishing instead of studying and graduated second from the bottom of his class.
During his third year of law school, in 2008, the financial crisis happened, the US housing market imploded, the unemployment rate doubled and the law firms across the country were closing.
Luke was clerking for a law firm but just three months before graduation, he got laid off.
Even though he put out 3,200 resumes to law firms and lawyers across the country, he only got 15 job interviews but no job offers.
So, he decided to start his own law practice and in October 2009, he got his law license and in the same month, he started Spectrum Legal Defense.
After working for 13 months for free and spending $15,000 on multiple failed advertising campaigns, on the 14th month, his advertising campaign blew up bringing him a lot of clients and this made his family very well-off.
Importance of saving money-
Luke was able to work for free for 13 months for his law practice as he graduated without a heavy debt and had money in the bank.
From a young age he was taught to save and invest aggressively.
He did construction work in Alaska and his wife worked hard and saved money.
Career & books-
Luke worked as an Inspector at Alaska Testlab from 1994 to 2003.
He owned the Spectrum Political Services from 2003 until 2006.
Later, he owned Spectrum Legal Defense in Fairfax, Virginia from 2009 to 2013.
Luke was a Partner at Nichols & Green, PLLC in Fairfax from 2011 to 2020.
He authored law books namely, The Virginia Reckless Driving Handbook, The Virginia DUI Handbook, Driving on a Suspended License in Virginia and Virginia Drug Crimes Defense Manual.
Luke also worked and wrote articles for the CarpPro Magazine, a carp fishing magazine.
As he owned the law practice, he had the time to start and work on his YouTube channel and publish fishing and outdoor adventure videos.
Eventually, his YouTube channel grew bigger than his law practice and he became a full-time YouTuber in 2014.
Starting on YouTube-
Luke started his YouTube channel Catfish and Carp on 28 November 2013.
Later, he started another channel, Outdoor Boys, on 5 May 2015.
As of May 2026, Luke has more than 19 million subscribers on the Outdoor Boys channel and 1.2 million subscribers on his Catfish and Carp channel.
His dedication made him one of the most successful outdoor YouTubers.
As a professional YouTuber, Luke used to work 80–100-hour weeks and used to spend many late nights editing. He even camped with pneumonia and built log cabins while being injured.
YouTube not only allowed him to provide for his family but also make wonderful memories with them.
Retirement-
After being on YouTube for 11 years and producing over a thousand videos, Luke announced his retirement from the platform in May 2025.
As his channel blew up with billions of views and millions of subscribers, he and his family started getting recognized everywhere and he started feeling concerned about their safety due to the huge exposure and people trying to contact them in public.
Luke realized too much attention is unhealthy.
His retirement wasn’t an immediate decision, he always knew that he wouldn’t continue on YouTube forever and after thinking about retirement for a couple of years, he retired at 47, in 2025.
After retiring, Luke is helping his son, Tom, with his YouTube channel Outdoor Tom. As of May 2026, this channel has 2 million subscribers.
He also retired to get relieved of the content production pressure and help other people.
As he constantly used cameras for more than a decade of being a YouTuber, he developed phantom camera syndrome after retirement.
While carrying out his life, he feels that he needs to adjust the camera, even when there isn’t one.
Personal life-
Luke met Rebecca Reimann in church.
She was asked to give the sermons and he saw her for the first time and fell in love and this started their relationship. At the time, they were in their sophomore years at BYU.
Rebecca hails from Salt Lake City, Utah.
They got married in August 2001.
After running his political consulting business in Utah for three years, his family life suffered due to long working hours.
So, they moved to Virginia and Luke attended the George Mason University – Antonin Scalia Law School and started his own law practice.
But after practicing law for a few years, his wife had difficulty conceiving.
So, they bought a house and moved to the countryside and Rebecca became pregnant with Tommy, followed by Nathan and Jacob.
Much like Luke, his sons are also interested in outdoor life and they too want to become YouTubers; Tommy is already a YouTuber.
Tidbits-
- Luke loves travelling and has travelled all around the world for fishing charters.
- He loves catching bluefish, fly fishing for trout and catching carp on the surface.
- Luke learnt the outdoor survival techniques from trial and error and never took any training.
- He, along with his 4-year-old son, camped at -60°.
- While camping, mice give him more trouble than any other animal.
- Luke loves preparing fresh warm bread during camping and doesn’t like dehydrated meals.
- He is tall at 6’4” and loves clam digging.

Luke Nichols’s YouTube channel is the one we watch daily, and it is the biggest inspiration for my family. We are great fans of him and always being motivated by watching his outdoor boys channel. Sometimes we get worried while watching the videos of him camping in Alaska all by himself, but we know he is an outdoor expert. Always wishing him good luck and wanna thank him for inspiring us every day!

Not to get cheesy, but if there is a zombie apocalypse, I choose you to survive it with. I would hold the line with someone brave like you. What is the source of your bravery?

I enjoy watching the Outdoor Boys videos, I love that Luke has the family in many of the videos, and seeing how much fun his sons have fishing, camping, and having fun. I also love watching some of the stuff he cooks and would love to have the recipe for the fried bread.
Naveen Reddy · October 17, 2023 at
Yes, Andrea, it’s always fun to watch his sons!

I enjoy everything about the Outdoor Boys channel, particularly Luke’s knowledge of all things outdoors. However, I most admire how he loves his family, especially his kids. I’m 80 years old with not too many grains left in the hourglass and envy that he’s smart enough to value time with his kids the way he does.

Hello, my husband and I live in Pembrokeshire in Wales UK.
We love your YouTube channel. It’s totally inspiring. We are both retired now but raised 5 children and 9 grandchild and we adore every single one of them. We did lots of things with our children when they were young which is so important, and they do the same with their children. It has a lasting impression with children that they take into adult life and pass on to subsequent generations. Wishing you and your family well keep the videos coming God bless.
Jackie and Anthony Vaughan.
